A JOURNAL FOR MARRYING IN SCOTLANDPLANNING / PLACES / PEOPLE

SCOTTISH WEDDING GUIDE / THE NOTEBOOK

A small wedding, properly thought through

With fewer guests, you can make different choices about your day. The paperwork, permission to use a place and practical access still deserve a plan.

Separate the place from the permission

A photograph of a ceremony does not establish that you can hold one there now. Ask the landowner or operator about your proposed date, group size, photographer and any equipment. Keep written confirmation.

Work out the route

Check how everyone gets to the meeting point, what the final walk involves and what happens if the weather makes the plan unsuitable. Describe the route honestly to guests and suppliers.

Give the ceremony room to breathe

Allow time for getting ready, travel, the ceremony and a meal. Choose an indoor fallback you would still be happy with. Keep rings, documents and essential items with someone who knows when they are needed.

Use current official requirements

Start with the National Records of Scotland guidance and speak to the appropriate registrar about your circumstances.

Our starting-point guide helps you decide which parts of the day matter most.
